The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
McCoy at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Haynes to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Caleb Williams in the 2nd pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Troy Fautanu went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Chop Robinson at slot 40 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Christian Haynes at the 67th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 100 with a little surplus value in J. Michael Sturdivant. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick 102, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Theo Johnson in pick No. 141 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 6 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Bru McCoy in the 223rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
