It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jacobe Johnson in the 241st pick, a good 54 spots before the room expected him.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
That Reese pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Sonny Styles at pick No. 26 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
In the Round 1 slot they get an enforcer at safety, though they paid up to get him. Need was not the driver here.
A big swing on Mike Washington Jr. at Round 2, Pick 21, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took DeMonte Capehart at par in No. 135, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Jeff Caldwell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ephesians Prysock in the 177th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Pat Coogan at pick No. 180, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Logan Taylor at pick 239, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jacobe Johnson at No. 241 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
