You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Dolphins did exactly that with Zak Zinter in pick No. 65.
Hadden falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kingsley Suamataia. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Zak Zinter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Ben Sinnott at the 125th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Nelson Ceaser at par in pick 158, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cornelius Johnson at slot 184 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kamal Hadden at the 198th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Steal is underselling it; Garret Greenfield at the 241st pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
