The Falcons spent real capital to be 32 picks early on Taulia Tagovailoa, and the board is going to hold them to it.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Gray at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
A conviction pick on J.J. McCarthy at the 34th pick that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at Round 2, Pick 11, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braden Fiske at slot 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at the 110th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cedric Gray at pick No. 142. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Jha'Quan Jackson at the 189th pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Taulia Tagovailoa, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Matthew Jones at slot 241, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
