Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. They executed a plan and it shows in the A.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Reaching for Jones Jr. left real value on the table behind him. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
R2.1
· Pick 33
· Emeka Egbuka
· WR
· rank 24
The board had Emeka Egbuka higher than the 33rd overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Tyler Warren
· TE
· rank 15
Tyler Warren at No. 38 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 20
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in pick No. 67, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Tate Ratledge
· OG
· rank 75
Tate Ratledge in Round 3, Pick 5 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Omarion Hampton
· RB
· rank 30
They will replay Omarion Hampton at pick 76 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.13
· Pick 77
· Jalen Royals
· WR
· rank 63
Jalen Royals slipping to the 77th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.3
· Pick 104
· Emery Jones Jr.
· OT
· rank 126
Emery Jones Jr. in slot 104 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.6
· Pick 143
· Barrett Carter
· LB
· rank 83
They barely believed it either: Barrett Carter still on the board at the Round 5 slot. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R5.31
· Pick 168
· JJ Pegues
· DT
· rank 186
JJ Pegues at pick No. 168 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.1
· Pick 217
· Tahj Brooks
· RB
· rank 124
The board fumbled Tahj Brooks all the way to No. 217, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4
· Pick 220
· Oronde Gadsden II
· TE
· rank 142
Somehow Oronde Gadsden II was still sitting there in the 220th pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.22
· Pick 238
· Ryan Fitzgerald
· PK
· rank 117
Ryan Fitzgerald at the 238th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
