You build a draft on nights like this. Sam Roush had no business being available in the 127th overall pick, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They will need Josephs to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with A.J. Haulcy worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
De'Zhaun Stribling in pick 95 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Billy Schrauth in pick No. 125 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They will replay Sam Roush at Round 4, Pick 27 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Kaytron Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Zxavian Harris a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Drew Allar in slot 141; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They liked Matt Gulbin enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 168. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the 182nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
