The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Jamon Dumas-Johnson, the No. 192 name on the board, sitting there at the 238th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
The Badger pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Caelen Carson leading the way.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
They did well to land Tyler Booker in the 44th pick, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in slot 67, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They barely believed it either: Kamari Ramsey still on the board at pick No. 79. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Devin Neal at pick 103 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jake Majors in No. 138 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Elijhah Badger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take PJ Williams this early at the Round 7 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 238 is the definition of value, full stop. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
