You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Nick Nash at pick 106, roughly 145 spots before his name belonged. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
The Skattebo pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Hit on Tyler Booker and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Tyler Booker at par in No. 34, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A conviction pick on Shemar Stewart at the 39th overall pick that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tyler Warren at Round 3, Pick 1 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach pick 70 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Tez Johnson at the 72nd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy little value on Jayden Higgins in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nick Nash at No. 106 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Will Lee III at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Value said wait; Nohl Williams in Round 7, Pick 7 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Seth McLaughlin slid further than he should have, and pick 223 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A running back of that caliber at the 235th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
