If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Packers, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
On value alone, Barrett makes the weekend a net positive. The Packers indulged a want in Bullock while a need in edge rusher and tight end stayed open.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Nubin at the 34th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Fair-plus on Ennis Rakestraw Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 58 with a little surplus value in Braden Fiske. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cooper Beebe is a better player than the 88th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With edge rusher and tight end still to address, they spent slot 91 on Calen Bullock, a safety they were not short of.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at No. 127 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Cedric Gray come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 36. A minor itch, scratched.
They robbed the room for Roger Rosengarten here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Isaiah Williams at pick No. 204 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Emani Bailey at the 216th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Michael Barrett in slot 243 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They will replay Austin Reed at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
