When a board-topper like Andru Phillips slides to the 219th pick, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The cost of the Colson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
A big swing on Junior Colson at Round 2, Pick 25, well ahead of any board in the building. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Trey Benson at the 88th overall pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at pick 125 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 135 on Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker they were not short of.
De'Corian Clark at slot 203 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kingsley Eguakun at Round 6, Pick 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 219th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Matthew Jones in the 246th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
