They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: McCallan Castles, 123 picks early at slot 219.
They banked enough surplus on Thomas to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No drama and no debate, Kamari Lassiter went about where he belonged in slot 41. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Junior Colson at the 58th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Fair-plus on Jaden Hicks, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
MarShawn Lloyd at pick No. 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khristian Boyd in Round 4, Pick 10, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Michael Pratt at slot 127 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Eric Watts at pick 169 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Curtis Jacobs at the 202nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
McCallan Castles at No. 219 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Frank Crum in the 245th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Nathan Thomas here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Deantre Prince at pick No. 255, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
