Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. De'Corian Clark, the No. 195 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 246.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Packers indulged a want in Mustapha while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. They will need Jones to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jordan Morgan at the 41st overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
They took Josh Newton at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board had cheaper options than Tykee Smith at the 88th pick, and it noticed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cooper Beebe at No. 92 is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 25 on Malik Mustapha with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A slide stopped in pick No. 135, with Tommy Eichenberg worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Rasheen Ali slipping to pick 203 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
JD Bertrand in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They went early on Matthew Jones in the 219th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 246th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
