The Packers put a flag in the ground for McCallan Castles, 84 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Melton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nothing to complain about; Cooper Beebe went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at the 58th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Good price on Jaden Hicks in Round 3, Pick 25, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Value with a capital V on Max Melton in slot 91, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
James Williams at pick 96 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor itch, scratched.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javon Foster well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Jalyx Hunt in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Isaac Guerendo in Round 4, Pick 26; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Luke McCaffrey at pick 153 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Tanor Bortolini at pick No. 169 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Cedric Johnson at the 202nd pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Magee. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 219th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Jowon Briggs at No. 245 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
They liked Sam Hartman enough to skip the value, taking him in the 248th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for McCallan Castles, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
