The curious call sets the tone. With quarterback, tight end and other spots still glaring, the Packers used the 92nd overall pick on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not exactly short of.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will need Allen to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in slot 41, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A minor itch, scratched.
They let Cooper Beebe come to them and pounced at No. 88. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Cole Bishop in pick 125 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A premium they did not need to pay, Braelon Allen a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Tanor Bortolini at Round 6, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Isaiah Neyor at pick No. 217 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They did well to land Sheridan Jones in No. 219, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A conviction pick on Donell Harris Jr. at Round 7, Pick 26 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
