Somebody in pick No. 217 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Christian Jones, the No. 183 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Every board in the league had Barrett lower, and that gap is the story.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at slot 42 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Patrick Paul at par in Round 2, Pick 19, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Javon Bullard in the 62nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nice patience on Brandon Dorlus, who had no business lasting to the 71st overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Malachi Corley in No. 92 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 108 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let Kris Abrams-Draine come to them and pounced at pick 130. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Khyree Jackson slipping to Round 4, Pick 35 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Michael Barrett at pick 174 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: JT Daniels at slot 197 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Jones in the 217th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Joshua Gray at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fentrell Cypress II at No. 240 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
