You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Packers spent Round 2, Pick 26 on Junior Colson while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat unaddressed.
If Bortolini pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. On value alone, Flournoy makes the weekend a net positive.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 41st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A curious use of Round 2, Pick 26. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Junior Colson did not.
Nothing to complain about; Jaden Hicks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at pick 91 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Johnny Wilson in the 126th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Tanor Bortolini, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Garret Greenfield in slot 202 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ryan Flournoy slipping to pick No. 219 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Trevin Wallace, who had no business lasting to pick 245. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
