You could see the war room lean forward. Ricky Pearsall at slot 91 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The cost of the Milton III reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Packers indulged a want in Williams while a need in edge rusher and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Quinyon Mitchell at slot 25 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Troy Fautanu here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Payton Wilson in pick No. 63 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
You do not let a wide receiver like Ricky Pearsall reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in the 97th pick, where Jaden Hicks graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
MarShawn Lloyd in No. 115 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of the 126th overall pick. Edge rusher and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a linebacker in James Williams did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wiley in Round 4, Pick 33, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
M.J. Devonshire slid further than he should have, and Round 6, Pick 27 is lovely value for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nothing to complain about; Garret Greenfield went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Edefuan Ulofoshio slipping to pick 245 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Josh Proctor at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
