You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Packers spent Round 4, Pick 35 on Cedric Gray while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat unaddressed. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. That Logan Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If Watson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value.
By-the-book stuff, Kalen King at the 41st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Devontez Walker for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 88 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Fair-plus on McKinnley Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in No. 125. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 135th pick on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
They liked Blake Watson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 203. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Kenny Logan Jr., who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 42. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
No edge and no loss on David Ugwoegbu in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Donovan Jennings in pick No. 246 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
