You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Myles Cole in pick 126.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That Thomas pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
They read the board right and Kool-Aid McKinstry was the payoff at the 41st pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 26. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 60 with a little surplus value in Chris Braswell. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Renardo Green slipping to pick 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for DJ James in the 91st overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Myles Cole in Round 4, Pick 26 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 155 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Dylan Laube at par in the 169th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Nathan Thomas at pick 219 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
