You could see the war room lean forward. Tre Harris at the 217th overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Ugwu has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Joe Alt in No. 9, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 43 with a little surplus value in Quinn Ewers. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jermaine Burton slipping to Round 3, Pick 9 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Howard Cross III in the 82nd overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jason Marshall Jr. at pick No. 109 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Tahj Brooks in pick 135; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Jaylan Ford at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Tre Harris in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Brian Ugwu in pick No. 230 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
