Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent Round 3, Pick 28 on Kalen King, a name most had 48 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Thomas. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Amarius Mims slipping to the 41st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No drama and no debate, Kingsley Suamataia went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value with a capital V on Max Melton in slot 88, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kalen King. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in Round 4, Pick 26: Blake Fisher for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They read the board right and Sione Vaki was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 33. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Taking Ty'Ron Hopper in No. 202 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy bit of business in the 219th pick, where Jaylan Ford graded well above the range. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They paid a round early for Sam Hartman in the 245th overall pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nathan Thomas at pick No. 255 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
