The Packers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, in No. 202. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Every board in the league had Goncalves lower, and that gap is the story. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A slide stopped in pick No. 41, with Graham Barton worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and Edgerrin Cooper was the payoff at slot 58. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Matt Goncalves at the 88th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Zak Zinter in pick 91 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sataoa Laumea. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Sione Vaki at the 169th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board fumbled Luke McCaffrey all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Julian Pearl in Round 6, Pick 44. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy little value on Donovan Jennings in pick 245, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value with a capital V on KT Leveston in pick No. 255, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
