This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jaylan Ford, the No. 195 name on the board, stolen at the 219th pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
If Tagovailoa pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Adding Nathan Shepherd by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in slot 41; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jonathon Brooks in No. 43 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Kamren Kinchens at par in pick No. 60, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid a round early for Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 9, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 82 with a little surplus value in D.J. James. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Roman Wilson in the 111th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in the 119th pick, with Tate Ratledge worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked Luke Lachey enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Raheim Sanders in pick 165, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Ty'Ron Hopper still on the board at slot 170. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Steve Linton at the 187th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Jacob Cowing at No. 189 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Gray. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylan Ford in pick No. 219 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Taulia Tagovailoa in the 230th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
