Thirty-one other rooms let Christian Jones slide, and the Packers were the ones holding the card at slot 217. Highway robbery.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
They are betting Allen proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Terrion Arnold in the 25th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keon Coleman in No. 41 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
They liked Braelon Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 29. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaden Hicks at pick 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Javon Foster at pick No. 135 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Darius Muasau in the Round 6 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Christian Jones reach the 217th overall pick and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tatum Bethune at the 219th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Fentrell Cypress II slipping to slot 246 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
