Somebody in slot 168 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Tykee Smith, the No. 146 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Every board in the league had Beebe lower, and that gap is the story. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at slot 43 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Xavier Legette was the payoff at No. 88. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at pick 127 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Tykee Smith in pick No. 168 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They paid sticker price for Emani Bailey in the 204th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyrice Knight at pick 216, value and slot in agreement. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They took Evan Williams at par in pick No. 243, which is nothing to complain about. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 31, where Brevyn Spann-Ford graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
