There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Hayden Hatten a full 82 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
The Smith steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Troy Fautanu at the Round 1 slot, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Byron Murphy II in pick No. 43; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Kingsley Suamataia in pick 61, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They jumped the gun on Audric Estime, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Will Shipley in slot 92 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Max Melton at the 99th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Tykee Smith for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A surprising call. With quarterback and tight end still to address, they spent No. 125 on Cole Bishop, a safety they were not short of.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 135th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Jalen Green at par in the 203rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Carson Steele at Round 6, Pick 42 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hayden Hatten. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Caleb Okechukwu at pick No. 246, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
