Green Bay Packers

A weekend the Packers spent ahead of the board, for worse: F.

The Packers went off the board in a big way for Hayden Hatten, 120 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in quarterback stayed open. Getting Pritchett where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 30
In pick No. 28 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 50
They jumped the gun on Graham Barton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 58
They went early on T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 16, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 75
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cooper Beebe well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Max Melton · CB · rank 112
A real head-scratcher, Max Melton in slot 88 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 97
Audric Estime in the 91st pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 130
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Cole Bishop in Round 3, Pick 33 leaves quarterback for later.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 149
Dylan Laube at pick 99 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 136
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in the 126th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 189
They talked themselves into Michael Barrett at the 159th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.26 · Pick 162 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 146
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nehemiah Pritchett at slot 162. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 215
Braiden McGregor at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.20 · Pick 195 · Carson Steele · RB · rank 282
Carson Steele in No. 195 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 208
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at pick No. 203 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Hayden Hatten · WR · rank 336
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hayden Hatten in slot 216, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Cal Haladay · LB · rank 301
A big swing on Cal Haladay at the 243rd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Isaac Rex · TE · rank 318
They reached a country mile for Isaac Rex at pick No. 251, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
