You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Packers spent pick No. 125 on Malik Mustapha while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots sat unaddressed.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Trice falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Mustapha has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value. More want than need.
Circle this one: Bralen Trice at the 41st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nothing to complain about; Jonathon Brooks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Christian Mahogany, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took Zak Zinter at par in slot 92, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Blake Fisher in pick No. 104 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 25: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 4 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in pick No. 140, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Braiden McGregor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Muasau. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
You do not let a linebacker like Omar Speights reach Round 6, Pick 44 and blink. They did not. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Eric Gentry at slot 246 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
