Call it larceny. Johnny Wilson sat on the board until the 121st pick, and the Packers did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
If Lindberg pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
A straight-up fair deal on Kiran Amegadjie at No. 53, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Xavier Worthy at the 57th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Junior Colson in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Mike Sainristil at slot 88 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 29: Tykee Smith adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Johnny Wilson in the 121st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on MarShawn Lloyd in pick 125; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Braelon Allen at No. 135 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Trevor Keegan at the 203rd pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Chad Lindberg at slot 217 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
