The Packers did not so much draft Braelon Allen as overpay for him, 26 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Getting Clark where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback and interior defensive lineman went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get an enforcer at safety. More want than need.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Bralen Trice in pick 43, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, T.J. Tampa at Round 2, Pick 25. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Payton Wilson at the 73rd overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy little value on Mike Sainristil in No. 88, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at slot 92, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Matt Goncalves went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in No. 125 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A want over a need in the 135th pick: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while quarterback and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
De'Corian Clark at slot 217 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 6 slot, where Erick All graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A running back of that caliber at pick 220 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steele Chambers in Round 7, Pick 20 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A slide stopped in the 246th overall pick, with Joshua Cephus worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
