You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most.
Getting Cephus where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Allen pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan in slot 41 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value with a capital V on Cooper Beebe in pick 88, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Tykee Smith at No. 92 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for MarShawn Lloyd in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Braelon Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in the 135th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
JD Bertrand slid further than he should have, and the 203rd overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A premium they did not need to pay, Matthew Jones a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Trevor Keegan in the 219th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Joshua Cephus was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 26. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
