Hard to follow the map here. The Packers bypassed edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Malik Mustapha at Round 4, Pick 35, a spot they had covered.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jones.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Nubin is a better player than the 41st pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Mike Sainristil at No. 88 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at pick No. 92, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at slot 125 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Malik Mustapha, a safety they were not short of.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Jones in the 203rd overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Matthew Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 217. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Joshua Cephus at the 219th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy little value on Eric Gentry in No. 246, a step better than break-even. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
