Green Bay Packers

The Packers robbed the room for Newton. Final grade: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Josh Newton had no business being available in pick 89, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The bottom line is a respectable B.

They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback and interior defensive lineman went begging. Reaching for Cephus left real value on the table behind him.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 37
No edge and no loss on Kamren Kinchens in No. 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 38
Nothing to complain about; Chop Robinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 52
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 57th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 66
A surprising call. With quarterback and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent pick 67 on Javon Bullard, a safety they were not short of.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 82
Mike Sainristil in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 59
Josh Newton in pick No. 89 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 80
Nice patience on Christian Mahogany, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 28. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Tyrice Knight · LB · rank 115
Tyrice Knight at slot 125 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 128
They did well to land Javon Foster in pick 135, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
A reach for Jaylen Wright in the 141st overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 197
A clean, defensible pick in Round 6, Pick 28 with a little surplus value in Christian Jones. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Erick All · TE · rank 216
By-the-book stuff, Erick All at pick No. 217 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 239
Joshua Cephus at No. 219 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 251
No drama and no debate, Eric Gentry went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
