The war room fell hard for Matthew Jones, and it showed at slot 203: 39 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. No fireworks, but a solid B.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Wilson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Kinchens pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.29 · Pick 29 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 31
Tyler Nubin at pick 29 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 37
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 2 slot on Kamren Kinchens, a safety they were not short of.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 40
A slide stopped in the 57th overall pick, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 70
Payton Wilson at No. 88 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 90
By-the-book stuff, Sedrick Van Pran at the 91st pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Nice patience on Cooper Beebe, who had no business lasting to pick No. 92. The roster fit checks out.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 130
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on MarShawn Lloyd. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylen Wright in No. 135, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 242
A wild overpay on Matthew Jones in pick 203, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 239
They talked themselves into Joshua Cephus at Round 6, Pick 42, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 251
They reached into another round for Eric Gentry, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Trey Wedig · OT · rank 269
Value said wait; Trey Wedig in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
