Green Bay Packers

A solid, sensible weekend for the Packers: B.

The tape said wait; the Packers did not. Matthew Jones went at Round 6, Pick 29, a good 38 picks before the board was ready.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Nate Wiggins · CB · rank 15
In the 26th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 37
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 41 with a little surplus value in Kamren Kinchens. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 84
Nothing to complain about; Braden Fiske went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 82
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in No. 89. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Tykee Smith in pick 91 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 130
No drama and no debate, MarShawn Lloyd went about where he belonged in the 125th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 155
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 215
They liked Tanor Bortolini enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 203. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 242
A big swing on Matthew Jones at Round 6, Pick 29, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 234
They went early on Trevor Keegan in the 217th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 205
Jared Wiley in pick 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 257
Dwight McGlothern at No. 246 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
