The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Matthew Jones, taking him 25 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Kamren Kinchens in the 41st pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 57, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 88 on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
They paid a round early for Khyree Jackson in pick No. 91, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on MarShawn Lloyd in pick 125; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Kamal Hadden at par in slot 135, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing JD Bertrand in the 203rd pick. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Matthew Jones in pick No. 217 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Joshua Cephus at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Eric Gentry. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
