The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Matthew Jones, taking him 25 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Haynes pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Calen Bullock in the 43rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in pick 88, with Christian Haynes worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Tykee Smith in No. 91 leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots for later.
No drama and no debate, Ray Davis went about where he belonged in the 109th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Justin Eboigbe. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in Round 5, Pick 1, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Jones in pick 203 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Matthew Jones at the 217th pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They let Jawhar Jordan come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Nathaniel Watson in No. 246, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
