The Packers did not so much draft Matthew Jones as overpay for him, 25 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
By-the-book stuff, Calen Bullock at Round 2, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 57 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 91 on Tykee Smith with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the 125th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kamal Hadden at pick No. 135 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 203 with a little surplus value in Christian Jones. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Matthew Jones at the 217th overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in No. 219, where Jawhar Jordan graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 246 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
