Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent pick 219 on McKade Mettauer, a name the board had a full 61 spots lower. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Barrett at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Packers indulged a want in Mustapha while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Kris Jenkins in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 25 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They went early on Tykee Smith in the 88th pick, and the value did not follow. A minor itch, scratched.
By-the-book stuff, Bucky Irving at pick No. 91 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Max Melton at slot 125 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malik Mustapha at safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
Kamal Hadden in Round 4, Pick 35 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a linebacker like Michael Barrett reach pick No. 203 and blink. They did not. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A wild overpay on Matthew Jones in No. 217, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; McKade Mettauer in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Joshua Cephus at the 246th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
