You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with McKade Mettauer in pick No. 219.
They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
T.J. Tampa in the 39th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at pick No. 41, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 2, Pick 25; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at pick 70 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tykee Smith at slot 88 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in the 91st pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A want over a need in slot 125: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Kamal Hadden in pick 135 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They did well to land Kenny Logan Jr. in the 217th pick, just ahead of his grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They reached a country mile for McKade Mettauer at No. 219, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Joshua Cephus at Round 7, Pick 26 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
