The Packers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 6, Pick 44 on Matthew Jones a full 23 spots early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
However the rest shakes out, Fautanu at that price is a win they earned.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Kamren Kinchens in the 35th overall pick, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at pick No. 41. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Payton Wilson in No. 57; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They talked themselves into Sedrick Van Pran at Round 3, Pick 7, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cooper Beebe at slot 88 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Tykee Smith, a safety that was not the priority.
A conviction pick on Kamal Hadden at pick 125 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 135th pick with a little surplus value in MarShawn Lloyd. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached a country mile for Jaylen Wright at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Isaiah Neyor in No. 203 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in Round 6, Pick 42; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Joshua Cephus at pick No. 246 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
