The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Kitan Oladapo, the No. 166 name on the board, sitting there at No. 203 like a gift left on the doorstep.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Jones reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Calen Bullock at the 41st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 88 on Tykee Smith with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on MarShawn Lloyd. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaylen Wright in No. 168 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kitan Oladapo in the 203rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Matthew Jones at slot 216 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Joshua Cephus, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in the 251st pick with a little surplus value in Maurice Smith. A need, and now a little less of one.
