You can hear the double-takes from here. The Packers took Jaylen Wright at Round 4, Pick 26, roughly 32 spots before his name belonged.

The Packers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 30
In the 25th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 41 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 59
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in No. 57. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 81
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Mike Sainristil. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Tykee Smith in Round 3, Pick 28 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
A big swing on Jaylen Wright at the 126th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 166
Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 168 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 197
Christian Jones at the 203rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 242
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Matthew Jones. It fills a real need, too.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 239
Joshua Cephus at No. 243 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 257
They paid sticker price for Dwight McGlothern in Round 7, Pick 31, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
