The rest of the league had time to spare on Braelon Allen; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 26 spots ahead at slot 125.
The Packers indulged a want in Williams while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Bertrand pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
T.J. Tampa at pick No. 41 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in the 57th pick, where Calen Bullock graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They did well to land Mike Sainristil in the 88th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Zak Zinter at Round 3, Pick 28 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at No. 125. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking James Williams at safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
Value with a capital V on JD Bertrand in pick 203, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Matthew Jones in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They jumped the gun on Joshua Cephus, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Eric Gentry at Round 7, Pick 26 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
