Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kris Abrams-Draine got past him. The Packers do not have to explain a thing at pick 98. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Packers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Beebe has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jackson Powers-Johnson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 41 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at the 63rd pick when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Jaylen Wright, who had no business lasting to pick 88. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 98th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Renardo Green at slot 104 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 27. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tykee Smith adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Kamal Hadden in Round 5, Pick 32 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 182 with a little surplus value in Isaac Guerendo. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Josh Proctor went about where he belonged in the 211th pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Jaylan Ford at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid sticker price for Kenny Logan Jr. in slot 243, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Jordan Magee slipping to the 251st overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
