The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Dallas Gant, taking him 102 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.28
· Pick 28
· Kool-Aid McKinstry
· CB
· rank 23
In No. 28 they get a potential shutdown corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 49
A premium they did not need to pay, Edgerrin Cooper a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R2.26
· Pick 58
· T'Vondre Sweat
· DT
· rank 45
T'Vondre Sweat at pick 58 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 61
They barely believed it either: Kingsley Suamataia still on the board at the 88th pick. It fills a real need, too.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Jaden Hicks
· S
· rank 85
Jaden Hicks in Round 3, Pick 28 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Isaac Guerendo
· RB
· rank 128
Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 126 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.28
· Pick 128
· Jarrian Jones
· CB
· rank 136
Jarrian Jones in pick No. 128 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.34
· Pick 134
· Tykee Smith
· S
· rank 160
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 34 on Tykee Smith with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
R5.33
· Pick 169
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 132
Somehow Christian Jones was still sitting there in the 169th overall pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.27
· Pick 202
· Nathaniel Watson
· LB
· rank 212
Nathaniel Watson in pick 202 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Dallas Gant
· LB
· rank 321
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dallas Gant well ahead of where he belonged. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.25
· Pick 245
· Tyler Owens
· S
· rank 255
They paid up for Tyler Owens at the 245th pick when waiting would have done the job. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.35
· Pick 255
· Frank Crum
· OT
· rank 294
Frank Crum in slot 255 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
