The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Dallas Gant, taking him 76 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jones.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.27
· Pick 27
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 19
In pick No. 27 they get a ballhawk on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24
· Pick 56
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 57
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in No. 56, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.26
· Pick 58
· Zach Frazier
· C
· rank 62
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Frazier. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.24
· Pick 87
· Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
· S
· rank 86
A straight-up fair deal on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 87th pick, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 89
Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Blake Corum
· RB
· rank 84
Nothing to complain about; Blake Corum went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Elijah Jones
· CB
· rank 115
A quiet steal in Round 4, Pick 26: Elijah Jones for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.33
· Pick 169
· Tykee Smith
· S
· rank 160
Value with a capital V on Tykee Smith in pick No. 169, a genuine coup. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R5.38
· Pick 174
· Malik Mustapha
· S
· rank 170
Malik Mustapha in slot 174 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R6.11
· Pick 186
· Kamal Hadden
· CB
· rank 168
They barely believed it either: Kamal Hadden still on the board at pick 186. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.27
· Pick 202
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 200
Joe Milton III at No. 202 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Trente Jones
· OT
· rank 194
Somehow Trente Jones was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.25
· Pick 245
· Dallas Gant
· LB
· rank 321
Dallas Gant in the 245th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.35
· Pick 255
· Tyler Owens
· S
· rank 255
Tyler Owens in the 255th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
