There is reaching, and then there is Dallas Gant at the 255th overall pick. The Packers jumped the board by 66 and dared it to prove them wrong.
However the rest shakes out, Fautanu at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Troy Fautanu at slot 41 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 26 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jaden Hicks at the 88th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in pick No. 91, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Tanor Bortolini at No. 126, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Malik Mustapha at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A straight-up fair deal on Kendall Milton at the 202nd pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in the 219th overall pick with a little surplus value in Nathaniel Watson. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bub Means. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dallas Gant at No. 255 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
