Nobody had Dallas Gant this high, and it is not close. The Packers reached 66 spots to get him at the Round 7 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is not that Trotter Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 28 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 25; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Value said wait; Jaden Hicks in the 58th overall pick says they were not listening. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reach on Khyree Jackson in the 85th pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 88 on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with edge rusher, tight end and other spots unsolved.
They took Brenden Rice at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Isaac Guerendo at No. 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Christian Jones at pick No. 126 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Elijah Jones in slot 134 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Mustapha in the 144th overall pick, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 20. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanor Bortolini. A need, and now a little less of one.
Joe Milton III in the 202nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Nathaniel Watson in pick 206, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They reached a country mile for Bub Means at Round 6, Pick 44, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Edefuan Ulofoshio slipping to pick No. 245 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Dallas Gant at No. 255 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
