The rest of the league had time to spare on Dallas Gant; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 65 spots ahead at slot 255. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
McCormick at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The Packers indulged a want in Gray while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
Graham Barton in Round 1, Pick 25 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Junior Colson at No. 49 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Sedrick Van Pran at the 65th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid a round early for Cole Bishop in pick 95, more than the board wanted. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Brenden Rice at pick No. 97 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Isaac Guerendo at No. 101, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 123rd overall pick on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
Blake Fisher slipping to slot 126 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good price on Theo Johnson in pick No. 127, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A curious use of the 132nd pick. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Tykee Smith did not.
Somehow Jarrian Jones was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 33, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mason McCormick at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kamal Hadden at pick 202 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nathaniel Watson at pick 219 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bub Means. The roster fit checks out.
Dallas Gant in slot 255 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
